Discover the Influential Factors for Determining OGI Sensitivity

Among the many losses encountered by the oil and gas industry, the losses due to emissions are far-flung. In 2015, the natural gas industry in the US alone emitted almost 162.4 million metric tons CO2 equivalent of methane. So, one can clearly notice that industries face the risk of regulatory compliance alongside the risks of product loss.

Therefore, sensitivity of the OGI camera is highly important for identifying gas leaks at different vulnerable points such as processing plants, transportation lines, compressor stations and hydraulically-fractured wells.

OGI Sensitivity

Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) technologies have become one of the more reliable options for identifying any leaks of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). So, what is the measure of effectiveness in OGI technology? In simple terms, sensitivity in OGI technology is defined for specific compounds in the form of mass flow rate for the leak.

You can think of sensitivity in OGI technology as the minimum amount of leak for a specific compound that ensures its detection. So, until and unless the mass flow rate of the leak of a particular compound is below the sensitivity of OGI technology the compound remains undetected.

Which Factors Influence OGI Sensitivity?

The factors influencing the sensitivity of OGI technology also have a crucial impact on the effectiveness of OGI cameras. The three primary factors that influence the sensitivity of OGI technology include the distance of the leak (range), wind speed and difference of temperature between background and gas plume.

You can anticipate the influence of these factors on OGI sensitivity easily. For example, the OGI sensitivity would reduce in long ranges due to the presence of other factors such as humidity and aerosols.

Similarly, higher wind speed can dilute the emitted gas plume at the leak site, thereby reducing OGI sensitivity.

Finally, the temperature difference between background and gas plume also increases the difference of thermal radiance between them. As a result, the contrast becomes prominent, and OGI sensitivity increases considerably.
