Applying OGI Technology for Long Distance Detection

When discussing gas detection, there are 3 important elements we consider. Loss of revenue, Environmental (pollution) and most importantly Safety. The use of OGI technology these days is prominent. OGI cameras are an effective addition in the infrastructure of many oil and gas industry facilities.

Quantifiable Factors for OGI Sensitivity in Long-Distance Applications

OGI cameras can be found on a wide range of facilities across the industry. Recent regulations have made fixed monitoring more desirable due to its ability to detect longer range and bigger parameters quickly and efficiently. There are certain identifiable factors that influence OGI detection limits. For example, the ΔT (temperature difference/background), distance and other significant factors such as gas concentration, exit velocity, wind velocity and compound spectral characteristics. All these play a crucial role in determining the detection capability of OGI cameras.

Looking at the Long Term Solution

Cooled OGI cameras with better sensitivity are better suited for longer distances. Uncooled OGI cameras are generally less sensitive, therefore more suitable for shorter distances. Having the ability to change the field of view (lens of the camera) and the spectral filter drastically enhance the ability for much improved long range detection.
